Fagioli rediscovers national side, dreams of World Cup after Turkey win

Midfielder Nicolò Fagioli has earned his place in Italy's starting lineup in the 4-1 victory over Turkey, showing the maturity that makes him dream of the World Cup. After two years without call‑ups, the 25‑year‑old said his greatest wish is to wear the blue shirt at the next World Cup tournament.

The Return to the National Team

Fagioli had not received any call‑up from the national team since the 4-1 win over Israel in October 2024, but he was included in the starting XI for Monday's match in Turkey. He described his return as unexpected, but the result of new confidence and maturity.

The midfielder, who moved to Fiorentina in January 2025 from Juventus, emphasized that he did not anticipate the invitation, but has always hoped to return to the Azzurri. “My biggest dream is to go to the World Cup with Italy,” he told RAI Sport.

Decisive Performance Against Turkey

Fagioli's performance in the 4-1 win sparked hopes of including him in the lineup against France, scheduled for Friday in the Nations League group stage. His contribution was deemed decisive for the team's positive result.

The midfielder commented on the importance of the win: “It was essential to bring home a result, both for the standings and for the team's confidence. After the 2-0 defeat to Belgium, we responded well in the second half.”

Future Goals and Motivation

Fagioli also spoke about the upcoming challenge against France, led by Zinedine Zidane: “Facing a team of champions with Zidane at the helm will be an indescribable emotion, a great test for all of us.”

The player acknowledged his difficult journey, citing an eight‑month suspension for gambling addiction in 2023, but said he has grown a lot since then, feeling more confident and determined.
