Fagan-Walcott urges Hearts to rebound from Graz embarrassment
Heart of Midlothian defender Malachi Fagan-Walcott called the 4-0 defeat to Sturm Graz "embarrassing" but insisted the squad remain optimistic ahead of the Champions League qualifier return leg at Tynecastle next week. He stressed that the heavy loss does not define the tie and that the team can still overturn the aggregate.
The 24‑year‑old made his competitive debut in the match, acknowledging the heavy defeat while pointing to the chances his side created and the need to avoid excuses. His debut underlined the limited preparation time the players have had together.
"It's just tough to take," Fagan-Walcott said, adding that the statistics of the game suggest it was not a 4-0 performance and that at this level the team must take its chances. He highlighted that the scoreline does not reflect the overall performance.
He continued, "We got chances as well, and if we take them, it looks like a different game," suggesting that a different outcome was possible had the opportunities been converted. This comment emphasized the fine margins that decided the first leg.
Fagan-Walcott reminded his teammates that "the tie is not over until the 90th minute at Tynecastle," emphasizing that the aggregate score can still be altered in the second leg. The warning kept the focus on the remaining time to fight back.
"We have only had a short time together, but we're all grown‑ups and we all take accountability, so we have to keep going," he urged, calling for the squad to stop making excuses despite limited preparation. The statement reinforced a collective responsibility.
"Of course it's embarrassing, it's 4-0, but these are things in football that happen. So, we'll take the embarrassment and we'll use it as strength for next week," he added, urging unity and a collective effort. The defender framed the loss as a catalyst for improvement.
Looking ahead, Fagan-Walcott remains confident that the team can build on the positives he identified and approach the Tynecastle fixture with renewed determination. His optimism sets the tone for the upcoming Champions League qualifier.
