Fabregas takes Como into the Champions League after Serie B jump

Como beat Leipzig 4‑1 in its first Champions League match, confirming the prediction of Cesc Fabregas, who has guided the club from its return to Serie B in less than three years, thanks to massive investments and a decisive management. The result sparked enthusiasm among Italian fans and much of Europe, who witnessed an unexpected feat.

Anticipation and historical context

The match had been anticipated since the end of the previous season, with interest that grew sporadically in a spasmodic manner. The public followed with trepidation the club's first appearance in a continental competition.

Less than three years ago Como was playing in Serie B, dealing with several structural problems. The leap to the top European stage occurred in a surprising time frame.

Fabregas' turning point

In mid-November 2023 the Hartono brothers dismissed Moreno Longo, surprisingly, to hand the bench to Cesc Fabregas. At the time the former Spanish midfielder did not even hold a coaching licence.

His debut at the helm of Como took place on 25 November against Feralpisalò. That match marked the beginning of a journey that took the club to the Champions League.

One hundred and twelve days after that first assignment, Como, reshaped by huge market investments, returned as a protagonist in Europe. The team has become one of the most fascinating stories of the Champions League.

“We are a young club, we are making steps even too fast compared to what we had planned, because we hoped to be at this point in 5‑6 years,” Fabregas said openly after the 4‑1 victory over Leipzig. His words confirm the speed of the progress achieved.
