Fabianski retires, eyes coaching the next generation of keepers

41‑year‑old Ex‑Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski announced on social media in east London that he is retiring from professional football. The former West Ham United custodian became a free agent after the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship. He said the decision marks the end of his playing career.

Fabianski confirmed he will devote his future to developing the next generation of goalkeepers, signalling a shift from playing to coaching. He described the move as a way to give back to the sport that shaped his life.

“Some goodbyes are harder than others. Today is one of those days,” Fabianski wrote, adding that football has been his “passion, my purpose, and my home”.

He recalled moments of pure joy, unforgettable victories, heartbreaking defeats, painful injuries and challenges that tested him in every possible way. He thanked every coach who believed in him, every teammate who fought alongside him, every club that allowed him to wear its badge with pride, and the supporters who stood behind him, adding a special note of gratitude to his family.

His message emphasized that the farewell is not final, as he plans to inspire and support upcoming goalkeepers. While his exact coaching destination remains unconfirmed, his commitment to nurturing young talent signals a new chapter.

Fabianski’s playing career concluded after eight years at West Ham United, following a seven‑year spell at Arsenal where he helped the Gunners win the FA Cup after saving two penalties in the semi‑final shootout. The two London clubs account for the bulk of his senior appearances.

He also spent four seasons with Swansea City. He made 62 appearances over two campaigns for Legia Warsaw and featured once for Lech Poznan’s first team.

Internationally, Fabianski earned 57 caps for Poland between 2006 and 2021 before announcing a tearful retirement from the national side. He stated his mission is to inspire, develop and support the next generation of goalkeepers.
