Exclusive: Plymouth Argyle, Barnsley chase Huddersfield Town midfielder

£1.25 million was the fee Barnsley paid for 27‑year‑old Herbie Kane in 2020, and now Exclusive Plymouth Argyle and Barnsley are racing to re‑sign the former Liverpool academy midfielder as the EFL transfer window closes with less than a week remaining.

Closing window intensifies race

The EFL transfer window is in its final stages, with less than a week left before the deadline. Clubs are not only hunting signings but also trimming wage bills and freeing space for new recruits, and Huddersfield Town may have more than one suitor for a fringe midfielder as the end of the window approaches.

Terriers midfielder Herbie Kane, 27, a Liverpool academy graduate, has not featured for Huddersfield under new head coach Martin Drury in any of their three league and cup matches this season. He slipped down the pecking order after the summer arrivals of Brentford’s Ethan Brierley and Peterborough United’s Archie Collins, and has logged just 41 appearances in two years since joining Huddersfield on a free transfer from Barnsley in 2024.

Barnsley, who originally paid £1.25 million for Kane in 2020, are reported to be keen on bringing him back under manager Daniel Stendel, who departed his first spell at the club less than a year before Kane’s arrival. Stendel has lost youngster Vimal Yoganathan to injury for several weeks and is looking to add depth to his engine room.

Plymouth Argyle renews interest

Plymouth Argyle also remain on Kane’s shortlist despite a loan spell at Home Park that ended early due to a hamstring setback. Tom Cleverley, the Pilgrims’ boss, described Kane as “outstanding”, saying he brought “what we didn’t really have, that sort of calmness and possession in midfield”. Cleverley added that the club will “Give us” the chance to sign him again, even after adding Tyreeq Bakinson to the squad.
