Ex-Rangers striker Nacho Novo mourns stepson’s death
Former Rangers forward Nacho Novo, now 47 and manager of Scottish seventh‑tier side Darvel FC, has announced the tragic death of his 26‑year‑old stepson Ross in a heart‑breaking Instagram post. The Spaniard described the loss as “absolutely broken” and asked for privacy during this extremely difficult time.
In the post Novo shared moving images of himself with Ross, writing: “Nothing in my life could’ve prepared me for this post. We are absolutely broken to share the sad news that our beautiful boy has tragically passed away.”
Ross died suddenly, and his younger brother later posted a tribute on TikTok, describing his sibling as “the best ever” and urging fans to respect the family. News reporter Tim Hanlon highlighted the outpouring of grief across social media.
Club response
Darvel FC issued a statement saying the club’s thoughts are with Novo and his family and asked supporters to respect their privacy during this extremely difficult time. The club, competing in the Scottish seventh tier, reiterated its support for the manager.
Tributes pour in
Former Rangers teammate Michael Mols wrote “Unbelievable Nacho, my thoughts and prayers.” Former teammate Steven Davis added “Thoughts with you all at this difficult time.” Broadcaster Laura Woods and wrestling star Grado also expressed their condolences, and a Rangers FC spokesperson said the club stands with Novo.
Career highlights
The Spaniard spent eight years at Ibrox, netting 70 goals in 250 appearances for the Gers and helping the side win three Scottish Premier League titles, three league cups and two Scottish Cups. He was inducted into the Rangers Hall of Fame three years before retiring in 2017.
In 2018 Novo suffered a heart attack while playing for a Rangers legends team in Berlin and underwent emergency surgery. He later spoke of the ordeal, saying he called his then‑seven‑year‑old son from the operating theatre as doctors worked to save his life.
Ross’s cause of death has not been disclosed, and Darvel FC continues to stand by Novo, urging the public to give the family space as they mourn.
