Ex-pro Kroos checks coach course – world champion turns licence coach

Former professional Kroos, former world champion and multiple Champions League winner, faces a completely different decision: The 36‑year‑old midfielder has, according to a Spanish newspaper, expressed interest in a coaching course for former professionals, which is set to take place in the 2027/2028 season, to extend his career.

Coaching Course for Former Professionals

According to the report, Toni Kroos has communicated his interest to the Spanish football association RFEF. The Spanish newspaper AS confirmed that he wishes to attend the course in the 2027/2028 season.

The course is intended to grant the official A license, which authorizes coaching at any level of competition. Whoever completes it successfully can subsequently work as head coach in any league. This would allow Kroos to overcome the current limitation of his qualification.

Currently, Kroos holds a coaching qualification that only permits him up to the third‑highest Spanish division. Without the A license, he could not work as head coach in either the first or the second Spanish league.

During his active career, the native of West Pomerania won the Champions League six times – once with FC Bayern Munich and five times with Real Madrid. He also lifted the World Cup with the German national team in Brazil in 2014.

Kroos ended his professional career after the 2024 European Championship and at that time ruled out an immediate move into coaching. His current interest, however, shows that he is now considering a structured path to a coaching position.

The contrast between his glittering playing career and the planned qualification course highlights that Kroos wants to consciously prepare his future. Observers now wonder whether he will take over a professional team after completing the A license.
