Ex-Man City star urges Elon Musk to chase Everton

Former Manchester City left‑back Michael Ball has taken to X to urge Elon Musk to buy Everton, positioning the tech magnate against fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos, who recently expanded his footprint at Liverpool. Ball, who also earned a single England cap in 2001, highlighted the rivalry between the two moguls and the potential for a fresh era at the Toffees.

Bezos, the American billionaire who also serves as Amazon CEO, is part of a consortium that acquired a 38 percent stake in Liverpool from Fenway Sports Group (FSG) in August 2026. The deal gave the Amazon chief a significant voice at the Merseyside club, further cementing his involvement in English football.

Liverpool's billionaire interest

1892 Holdings, led by millionaire businessman Amit Bhatia and backed by billionaire Facebook co‑founder Eduardo Saverin, holds an option to purchase a controlling stake in Liverpool within the next twelve months. The arrangement does not constitute a formal commitment, but it keeps the club on the radar of high‑net‑worth investors.

Everton on the market and Ball's call

Everton’s current owners, The Friedkin Group, are prepared to sell the Premier League side. The American group completed the takeover of Everton in 2024 in a deal exceeding £400 million, and The i Paper now values the club at around £800 million.

The Man behind the tweet is a former City defender, and Ball’s personal connection to Everton runs deep – he played for the Toffees and earned an England cap in 2001. On X he wrote: “Come on @elonmusk get involved and take on your rival once again @JeffBezos ⚽️”.

Everton manager Sean Moyes expressed surprise at the news of a potential sale, saying he had only learned of it that morning and that owners usually stay for twenty to thirty years. He added that a new ownership group could help the club return to challenging for European places.

SpaceX founder Musk, who also controls X, remains the world’s richest person, making his potential entry into English football a headline‑grabbing prospect. Whether he will take the plunge remains to be seen, but the invitation has already sparked widespread discussion across the sport.
