Ajax striker Tolu Arokodare scores against Atalanta and signals openness to permanent move

Nigeria international Tolu Arokodare made a decisive impact on Thursday as Ajax secured a 2-0 victory over Atalanta, opening the scoring after coming off the bench. The 22‑year‑old, on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers until summer 2027, also used the post‑match press conference to hint that a permanent transfer to Amsterdam is welcome.

Arokodare’s goal came early in the second half, restoring Ajax’s lead after a disciplined defensive display. "If you are an Ajax player you are important regardless of whether you start or not," the striker said, underscoring his belief in the squad’s collective ethos. He added that even when not on the pitch, training contributions help teammates improve.

The forward’s performance has reignited speculation about the purchase option built into his loan deal, reportedly valued between €18‑20 million. When asked about the negotiations, Arokodare deflected, stating, "That is something between Ajax and Wolves, I can’t comment on that."

However, he was unequivocal about his personal desire to stay: "Of course I am open to that. I love being here – the people, the supporters, the team, the club – everything is great." His enthusiasm was punctuated by a light‑hearted remark to a journalist, "Can everybody please be like William?" which drew laughter from the room.

Arokodare also praised teammate Marcos Leonardo, who started the match, saying, "Leo played very well in the previous game and the coach deserved to give him the start. I am a patient person; everyone wants to play, but the coach’s decision was right."

Ajax’s management has not yet confirmed whether they will trigger the option, but the striker’s public endorsement of the club and his on‑field contribution have added weight to the potential deal. Should the transfer materialise, it would mark a significant investment for the Dutch side and a permanent home for a player who has already begun to endear himself to the fans.

The next steps now rest with Ajax and Wolves as the summer deadline approaches, with Arokodare’s performances likely to influence the final decision.
