Ex-Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris battles chaos after Saturday tackle
Ex‑Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris found himself in the middle of a volatile scene on Saturday evening when he stepped in to protect a teammate during a massive on‑pitch brawl at the Tennent’s Sixes. Representing St. Johnstone, the former Chelsea star was forced to intervene as tensions boiled over between the hosts and Dundee United.
The flashpoint came when Premier Sports veteran Frazer Wright, who has logged more than 100 appearances for St. Johnstone, launched an aggressive tackle that sent Dundee United forward Morgaro Gomis sprawling on the edge of the box. The clash was broadcast live by Sports channel Premier Sports. Gomis’s legs were knocked from beneath him, prompting an immediate reaction.
Gomis scrambled to his feet and moved towards Wright, but the St. Johnstone defender was already advancing, drawing in players from both sides. A Dundee United player then pushed Wright to the ground while Gomis was restrained within the growing melee.
Morris, a former Chelsea midfielder, rushed into the fray, pulling several players apart, including the already‑fuming Wright. His attempts to calm the situation briefly halted the pushing and shoving that had erupted.
Red card and match outcome
The referee eventually showed a red card to Wright, the ex‑St. Johnstone centre‑back, and sent him to the sin bin for the rest of the game at Braehead Arena. Despite being reduced to ten men, St. Johnstone held on to secure a 2‑1 victory over Dundee United.
After the match Morris reflected, saying, “We’re a little bit old school,” and added, “I suppose it’s just two teams that want to win, isn’t it?” He also noted, “It was a strong tackle from Frazer, but I don’t think it was a red. I think he got the ball.”
The Tennent’s Sixes revival
The Tennent’s Sixes is a six‑a‑side indoor tournament held over two days at the Braehead Arena in Renfrewshire, featuring all twelve Scottish Premiership clubs. This edition marks the first tournament since 1993, with legends from each club taking part.
The competition will conclude on Sunday evening, when the two remaining sides contest the brand‑new Tennent’s Sixes trophy.
