Everton’s £7m gamble to plug midfield gap with Norgaard

Everton have agreed a £7 million deal with Arsenal to sign midfielder Christian Norgaard, a move reported on 1 Aug 2026 at 4:31 PM GMT+1. The transfer aims to fill the defensive‑midfield void left by Idrissa Gana Gueye’s contract expiry.

The Toffees are looking to restore balance to their midfield after a busy summer transfer window. Losing the experience of influential star Idrissa Gana Gueye created a clear gap that the club must address.

Manager David Moyes has already added Hayden Hackney and made Merlin Rohl’s loan move permanent, yet a seasoned defensive midfielder remained a priority. The search for a replacement therefore intensified under Moyes’s direction.

Christian Norgaard, a Danish international, won the Premier League with Arsenal last season after joining from Brentford. He made only seven league appearances and twenty in all competitions for Arsenal, starting just seven times, indicating limited impact despite his experience.

Arsenal have secured Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes on a £77 million verbal agreement, prompting them to move Norgaard on. The £7 million fee agreed with Everton reflects Arsenal’s willingness to cash in.

Everton and Arsenal have agreed the fee of around £7 million, and Norgaard has signed a pre‑contract to join Merseyside. A medical is scheduled for next week, and the transfer is in its final formalisation stage.

Norgaard’s extensive Premier League experience, including regular starts at Brentford, positions him as the natural replacement for Gueye both on the pitch and as a squad leader. Everton are also preparing bids for Manchester United forward Ethan Wheatley and have explored a £30 million pursuit of Baris Alper Yildiz, showing continued market activity.
