Everton refuse to part with Branthwaite as Liverpool eye 2027 replacement

Everton have signalled they will not sell England international centre‑back Jarrad Branthwaite, dealing a setback to Liverpool’s search for a long‑term successor to the ageing Virgil Van Dijk at Anfield. The Toffees’ stance follows the Merseyside club were keen on a 2027 deal for the 24‑year‑old.

Everton’s firm position

TEAMtalk’s Everton correspondent Harry Watkinson reported that the club view Branthwaite as a crucial player and have no intention of moving him, regardless of interest from Liverpool or any other side. David Moyes, re‑appointed in January 2025, has publicly said retaining Branthwaite is a top priority, and the defender’s contract now runs until 2030.

Liverpool’s scouting focus

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Liverpool are concerned about Van Dijk’s contract, which expires next summer when the Dutch defender will be 36. Brown explained that Liverpool are already planning for a replacement and have placed Branthwaite high on their radar.

“Liverpool have got a problem with Van Dijk and his contract situation,” Brown said. “When you factor that into your thinking, I think they will be ready to let him move on, and then they’ll have to look into his replacement.”

Brown added that Liverpool favour left‑sided centre‑backs and consider Branthwaite a strong candidate because he plays in the same city, making scouting straightforward. He noted that Liverpool are conducting due‑diligence on Branthwaite’s character, training habits and background.

“It seems like Branthwaite ticks a lot of boxes, and when you’re talking about replacements for Van Dijk, he is somebody who is going to be very high on that list,” Brown said.

Despite Liverpool’s interest, Everton’s hierarchy appear unwilling to negotiate, especially given the rivalry with their neighbours. The club would reportedly require a record‑breaking bid to reconsider, a scenario that seems unlikely in the current market.

With Branthwaite tied to Everton until 2030, Liverpool must look elsewhere for a long‑term solution to their defensive concerns, while Andoni Iraola’s side continue to monitor the defender as a potential future target.
