Everton gamble on Balogun as fee range sparks debate

LONDON — Reports indicate that U.S. striker Folarin Balogun is set to join Premier League side Everton from AS Monaco, with the fee reported at £40 million, €45 million plus €5 million in add‑ons, or $54 million on a four‑year contract, despite age reports ranging from 20 to 25.

Everton's motivation

Everton were attracted by Balogun’s impact at the World Cup, where he finished as the United States’ top scorer with three goals as the side reached the knockout stage. His 13 goals in 30 Ligue 1 matches for Monaco last season also demonstrated the finishing pedigree the Merseyside club covets.

Monaco have been open to selling the forward all summer, and the striker expressed a strong desire to leave the Principality, making the deal mutually beneficial. The British Press Association first reported the move on Monday, citing Everton’s willingness to meet Monaco’s valuation.

Balogun's career and Monaco's plans

Born in New York and raised in Britain, Balogun progressed through Arsenal’s academy before spells at Middlesbrough, Reims and finally Monaco. He attracted further attention after receiving a red card and a one‑game suspension in a 2‑0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup round of 32.

The suspension was deferred after a United States' intervention by President Donald Trump, allowing Balogun to feature in the 4‑1 loss to Belgium in Seattle on July 6, 2026. The intervention prompted a formal complaint to FIFA ethics investigators.

Monaco have already secured Matthis Abline as Balogun’s replacement and freed a non‑EU spot to finalise the arrival of Erik Lira, indicating the club’s strategy to reinvest the incoming funds. The deal also frees a non‑EU registration slot, easing the club’s compliance with league rules.

The transfer gives Everton a young, World Cup‑proven striker to bolster their attack, while Balogun gains a Premier League platform to develop further. Monaco, in turn, receive a substantial fee and the flexibility to reshape their squad ahead of the new campaign.
