Everton and Crystal Palace complete rare swap amid mental‑health saga
Brennan Johnson and Dwight McNeil have completed a four‑year swap, with Johnson heading to Everton and McNeil joining Crystal Palace, after Palace originally paid a club‑record £35 million for Johnson from Tottenham eight months ago.
By WILL PICKWORTH, SPORTS REPORTER and SIMON JONES, the clubs confirmed the exchange on 11 August 2026. Published: 10:21, 11 August 2026 | Updated: 10:35, 11 August 2026, the announcement came after weeks of speculation.
Everton’s drive for Johnson
Johnson said he was eager to link up with David Moyes' side, citing the manager, the squad and the club’s direction as key factors. “I’m excited to be here. The club speaks for itself – it’s a massive club and when I first heard of the interest I immediately wanted to come,” he told EvertonTV.
The winger becomes the fifth summer signing for David Moyes, joining the likes of Merlin Rohl, Hayden Hackney, Tyrique George and Christian Norgaard, reinforcing Everton’s ambitions in Merseyside.
Palace’s pursuit of McNeil
McNeil expressed enthusiasm about returning to South London, noting the recent success of the Eagles over the past two seasons. “The lads have had some great success over the last two seasons. It’s something that I want to be a part of, so I’m really looking forward to getting started,” he said.
His move follows a collapsed £20 million obligation‑to‑buy deal that fell through on Deadline Day in the winter, when Palace failed to finalise paperwork after McNeil had already undergone his medical.
The failed transfer sparked a furious reaction from McNeil’s girlfriend, Megan Sharpley, who accused the club of damaging his mental health. In a lengthy Instagram story she described the “cruelty” of the football world, saying McNeil was “toyed with until the final minute” and left “broken‑hearted with nothing but confusion”.
Sharpley’s statements highlighted broader concerns about player welfare, questioning why the industry tolerates such treatment despite the known importance of mental health.
For Everton, Johnson’s arrival adds depth to a squad already reshaping under Moyes, while Palace secure a committed winger on a long‑term deal, completing a rare swap that underscores both clubs’ strategic planning.
