Euro 2032 bid fuels rapid Maradona stadium overhaul in Napoli

While the Diego Armando Maradona stadium still hosts matches with its existing 54,000‑seat layout, Napoli’s municipality is fast‑tracking a €‑free redesign that will boost capacity to 63,000 and align the venue with the city’s Euro 2032 bid, and promise a modern fan experience.

Il Comune announced that the tender for the works is ready after the definitive green light, signalling the project’s entry into the operational phase.

Gaetano Manfredi, mayor of Napoli, confirmed the progress at the presentation of the dossier for the city’s Euro 2032 candidature, stating that the tender will be launched immediately once final approval is secured.

Edoardo Cosenza, the assessor for infrastructure, explained that the project has already obtained all favourable opinions and is prepared to be awarded through an integrated tender.

The goal is to transform the Maradona into a modern facility while keeping it fully functional during construction, ensuring matches can continue uninterrupted.

Tra gli interventi previsti, the third tier will be renovated to eliminate vibrations without reducing capacity, and the stadium will accommodate 63,000 spectators, up from the current approximately 54,000.

The athletics track will be removed, bringing the stands closer to the pitch and creating a more immersive experience for supporters.

Aesthetic upgrades include a new lighting system on the roof and façades that recall the historic "Stadio del Sole," with a special tribute to Diego Armando Maradona and his iconic goals.

Mobility improvements aim to enhance public transport, a factor praised by UEFA; the journey from the airport to the stadium will take about fifteen minutes, with 1,500 car spaces and 158 bus bays planned.

The new Maradona will also host the Maradona Experience, a photovoltaic plant and cutting‑edge services, positioning the venue as one of Europe’s most modern stadiums.
