Etihad threatens to sue the Premier League over the City case
Etihad, the main sponsor of Manchester City since 2009, has denied any responsibility for the alleged manipulation of the club's accounts and is now considering taking legal action against the Premier League, which it has singled out in its investigation.
Airline's Complaint
In a statement, Etihad "categorically rejects any investigation, conclusion or implication that suggests this company has been involved in improper commercial agreements." The company says the Premier League never contacted it to offer the opportunity to provide relevant information.
Context of the City case
According to the Premier League, City would have falsified its accounts for nine years, inflating revenue unrealistically and obtaining an illegal profit of more than one billion euros. Etihad, valued at around five billion euros, has been the club's main sponsor, contributing hundreds of millions to its coffers and lending its name to the stadium.
The airline argues that the Premier League's public communication about the investigation has damaged its image, even though Etihad does not appear in the final report. "The lack of clarity and transparency, as well as the selective “disclosure” of information, has caused damage to Etihad," the statement reads.
Etihad has expressed its pride in the long relationship with Manchester City, noting that the airline's name has been proudly carried by the club and its stadium for many years, connecting millions of fans around the world.
Currently, the company is seeking legal advice to launch actions against the Premier League and protect its interests, emphasizing that the league must assume the consequences of how the investigation has been presented.
