Etihad's 2015 denial threatens Man City's appeal defence

Inside the Etihad Stadium, a quiet office buzzed as legal teams prepared paperwork that could decide Manchester City’s fate. The club’s defence to overturn a guilty verdict for breaching Premier League financial rules now hinges on statements made by title sponsor Etihad during a 2015 investigation. The tension was palpable when the Cityzens confirmed on Friday they had lodged an appeal.

Appeal process and charges

The appeal targets an independent panel’s findings on 115 charges relating to a nine‑year period between 2009 and 2018. A new independent panel of three, appointed by the Premier League’s judicial panel, will hear City’s challenge and determine whether the club is guilty of 114 of those charges. The Premier League alleges the club artificially inflated revenue and reduced costs by more than £900 million, using what it describes as ‘sham’ sponsorship deals.

Manchester City maintains its innocence, insisting the deals were legitimate and funded by the Abu Dhabi government, not by the Abu Dhabi United Group owners. Sources close to the club claim it possesses “irrefutable evidence” that will prove the allegations false. If the league’s allowance for state‑owned bodies to sponsor clubs is upheld, the club’s defence could be bolstered.

Etihad’s 2015 statement

Complicating matters, Etihad Airways told the United States Department of Commerce, Transportation and State in 2015 that reports of government‑paid sponsorships were “false”. The airline’s statement declared it has been government‑owned since its founding and receives no subsidies from the Abu Dhabi government, financing itself through equity, shareholder and commercial loans.

This denial could cripple Manchester City’s defence by undermining a key part of its appeal. The club released a statement confirming the appeal on Friday, noting it lodged a comprehensive appeal at 7 pm on Thursday 1 October 2026. It described the Premier League’s opinion as containing “clear material errors, of law, principle and fact” and asserted the existence of a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence”.

Richard Masters, chief executive of the Premier League, said the core decision establishes that the club “systematically broke Premier League Rules for nearly a decade”. He added that the case is “the most significant in Premier League history” and that the league will move swiftly to provide certainty for clubs and fans.

Comments Sport Aaron Morris Senior Sports Reporter noted the appeal at 13:43 on 3 October 2026, with “View 2 Images” accompanying the report. The article repeatedly references Manchester, Premier, League, State, Rules and the terms MAN and CITY, underscoring the breadth of the saga.
