Ethan Mbappé faces a choice between Algeria, Cameroon and France

Ethan Mbappé, nineteen years old and playing as a striker for LOSC Lille, is being offered the chance to represent Algeria, Cameroon or France on the international stage, as he has just been called up to the France U21 team by Gérald Baticle.

International eligibility

Born and trained in France, Ethan Mbappé has Algerian roots on his mother's side and Cameroonian roots on his father's side, making him eligible to choose one of these three countries. His club, LOSC, is closely monitoring the situation, aware that the young striker's international future will depend on his personal choice.

FIFA regulations allow a player to change sporting nationality as long as he has not played an official match with the senior national team. Thus, as long as Ethan has not played for France's senior team, his options remain completely open.

Kylian Mbappé's views

In an interview with RFI, Kylian Mbappé was asked about his younger brother's choice. He said that “it’s personal, something very intimate” and that the decision must come “from the heart” and from the player’s life story.

The world champion emphasized that each dual‑national has a different relationship with the country they wish to represent, reminding that “when we talk about representing a country, we have to talk about the love and the history we have with that country, not just a sporting project.”

Kylian also mentioned other examples: Ayyoub Bouaddi chose Morocco, while Ibrahim Mbaye opted for Senegal, illustrating the diversity of decisions among dual‑national players.

Despite his recent call‑up to the France U21 team, Ethan Mbappé retains the freedom to decide his international future, a decision that, according to his older brother, will remain deeply rooted in his identity and personal history.
