Eriksen ends Wolfsburg stay to be near family after heart device

Christian Eriksen has ended his spell with VfL Wolfsburg by mutual consent, opting to return to Denmark to be close to his family. The 34‑year‑old midfielder leaves the German second‑tier side three months after collapsing in a friendly against Ukraine.

Contract termination

Eriksen’s deal with the club was due to run until June 2027, but both parties agreed to terminate it early. He joined Wolfsburg as a free agent a year ago after leaving Manchester United. The termination was described as a joint solution that respects the player’s wishes.

Health and family priorities

In 2022 the Danish international was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, a tiny device that has allowed him to continue his career. He suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening European Championship group match against Finland in Copenhagen in 2021 and later collapsed in the friendly with Ukraine.

"At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together," Eriksen said. He added that his time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows and that he believes the club is now in good hands as it aims to return to the Bundesliga.

Eriksen has not played since June, having made 34 appearances for Wolfsburg. The 151‑cap midfielder previously featured for Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford, and he arrived in Germany after a stint at Manchester United.

Wolfsburg’s managing director for sport, Dieter Hecking, said: "It was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s. We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract. Despite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his teammates, our staff and the fans."

Looking ahead, Eriksen expressed confidence that VfL Wolfsburg will achieve a successful future and regain its place in the Bundesliga, while he focuses on his health and family back in Denmark.
