Erik ten Hag's first signing finally lands in MLS after free transfer

Tyrell Malacia, the Dutch left‑back who was Erik ten Hag’s first signing for Man Utd, has ended a four‑month search for a club by joining MLS side FC Cincinnati on a free transfer. The 27‑year‑old made 50 appearances for Manchester United before departing Old Trafford at the end of last season.

Free transfer and contract terms

The move was completed on a free transfer, meaning United received no fee. General Manager Chris Albright said, “We are excited to add a player of Tyrell’s experience… his quality on the ball, defensive instincts and team‑first mentality is a welcome addition.”

FC Cincinnati currently sit ninth in the Eastern Conference of MLS. The Dutch left‑back joins a side looking to improve its position ahead of a weekend clash with Houston Dynamo. Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference schedule sees Cincinnati host the Dynamo this weekend.

Injury spell and reflections

Malacia’s United career was disrupted by injury; he missed the entire 2023/24 season and made just 11 appearances after his debut campaign of 39 games. In total he recorded 50 appearances for Manchester United. He broke his silence in November 2024, telling The Athletic that he had been focused on rehab, family and sleep.

The player opened up about two personal hardships that affected his form. He said his father Sanroy became unable to walk, and his grandmother, whom he called his second mum, passed away. “It’s a big impact for my family,” Malacia said.

Malacia hopes the move will revive his career after a difficult few seasons. He will aim to bring his experience from the highest levels of football to the Cincinnati squad. The club’s fans anticipate his defensive instincts will strengthen the back line in the upcoming soccer fixtures.
