England: Thomas Tuchel forces Cole Palmer to withdraw

Chelsea’s attacking midfielder, Cole Palmer, announced his withdrawal from England’s first post‑World Cup gathering after pressure from manager Thomas Tuchel. The decision was confirmed by several English media outlets on Monday.

A frustrated return after the World Cup

Thomas Tuchel had left Cole Palmer out during the World Cup, where the Tre, nickname of the Three Lions, finished in third place. This season, the 24‑year‑old was recalled into a 27‑man squad for the four Nations League matches.

Before the gathering, Tuchel warned Palmer that he needed to “prove something”, reminding him of the importance of his performances to win back his place. At the start of the campaign, the Chelsea player featured in seven matches across all competitions, scoring four goals.

Reasons for the absence

According to The Athletic, Palmer is suffering from a minor muscle injury and a workload management issue early in the season. The English club indicated that the player was “to be managed” in order to avoid a too‑tight succession of matches.

Thomas Tuchel said at a press conference: “It’s one thing to be called up, but it’s another to perform under the England shirt.” He added that Palmer needed to raise his level of play to justify his call‑up.

England trail Spain but share second‑place odds with France and Germany in Nations League

Implications for the Nations League

England will face Spain on Saturday 26 September at Wembley, then the Czech Republic on Tuesday 29 September, Croatia on 3 October and will finish the group against the Czech Republic on Tuesday 6 October. Palmer’s absence could affect Tuchel’s attacking options.

Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, both from Manchester United, are also uncertain. Rashford suffered a hip problem during the 1‑1 draw with Fulham, while Mainoo was substituted at the end of the match against Craven Cottage.

Palmer, however, played the previous Friday in Chelsea’s 3‑0 defeat to Brentford, and has already provided two assists in addition to his four goals, forming a dangerous partnership with Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro.

Thomas Tuchel may therefore have to revise the official squad list, with three potential absences already weighing on England’s preparation for the international window.
