Emirados Árabes warn of UK investment cuts if City faces harsh sanction
Emirados Árabes have warned the Reino Unido that a severe sanction on Manchester City – accused of 114 Premier League financial‑rule breaches – could trigger a cut in Emirati investments. The Bloomberg report says the warning hinges on how harsh the independent commission’s ruling becomes.
Possible sanctions and club response
The Premier League outlines penalties ranging from a fine to points deduction, relegation, expulsion or even stripping of titles won between 2009 and 2018. Manchester City confirmed on Friday it has lodged an appeal against the provisional finding. The final verdict is not due until January 2027.
Bloomberg data show the United Arab Emirates have poured more than 36 million euros into the Reino Unidos since 2021, targeting sectors such as defence, science and technology. Those funds have become a focal point in the diplomatic discussion surrounding the City case. The investment stream includes projects in renewable energy and aerospace, further deepening economic ties.
The controversy has already sparked political damage in England. Prime Minister Andy Burnham later retracted his comment that the scandal could force the owners to leave, describing it as ‘very worrying’ at the time.
In response, the British government issued an official statement asserting that no one is above the law and that any guilty parties must face the consequences of their actions.
