Atlético Madrid pursue MLS defender Obed Vargas

Atlético Madrid have entered talks with Major League Soccer club Seattle Sounders over the potential transfer of defender Obed Vargas. The 19-year-old American has impressed in MLS since joining Seattle from Seattle Sounders Academy in 2021.

Vargas has made 50 appearances for Seattle Sounders, scoring two goals and providing four assists. His performances have drawn attention from European clubs, including Atlético Madrid.

Atlético Madrid’s sporting director Jesús Fernández has been monitoring Vargas’ progress closely. Fernández previously structured the signing of midfielder Alan Franco from Independiente in January 2024.

The move would mark Atlético Madrid’s second MLS recruitment after signing midfielder Alan Franco earlier this year. Franco has since made 12 appearances for the club.

A fee is yet to be agreed, with Seattle Sounders valuing Vargas at over €5 million. Seattle Sounders sporting director Craig Waibel confirmed the club is open to discussions.

Atlético Madrid’s interest aligns with their strategy to scout emerging talent in non-traditional markets. Vargas could bolster their defensive options if the deal is finalized.
