Eintracht Frankfurt eye record‑breaking debut for 16‑year‑old Ilicevic on Sunday

The Großer Hype surrounding the Eintracht jewel sees Frankfurt hoping to carry the momentum of their 3‑1 DFB‑Pokal victory over Hamburger SV into the Bundesliga.

They will meet the Hanseaten again at the home Deutsche Bank Park, this time in a league clash.

Potential record debut

The Sunday duel could produce a very special debut.

Niko Ilicevic celebrates his 16th birthday on Saturday, making him eligible for Bundesliga action.

Head coach Adi Hütter may field the offensive midfielder the day after his birthday.

If Ilicevic plays, he will match Youssoufa Moukoko’s record as the youngest Bundesliga player at 16 years and one day.

Eintracht already trusts Ilicevic’s professional level, so a Sunday appearance is not unrealistic.

The club, however, stresses that his development must be gradual and carefully managed.

Ilicevic is also a German U17 international.

SGE president Mathias Beck told that they do not know whether he will debut – the decision rests with the coach – but he is already excited about the youngster’s future.

The president added he is proud of a talent from the academy who consistently impressed in the Riederwald youth matches.

During the summer, the 15‑year‑old took part in the full preseason with the first team.

Former sporting director Markus Krösche’s decision not to sign another ten‑million player that summer is seen as further proof of confidence in Ilicevic.

By next summer the playmaker could replace the four‑year‑older Can Uzun, who may be sold for a high transfer fee.

Last summer, top clubs such as FC Bayern, Barcelona and Chelsea showed interest, yet Ilicevic remained at Eintracht.
