Effzeh turn away free agent for striker crisis
In a quiet afternoon at the RheinEnergieStadion, 1. FC Köln – the Effzeh – confirmed that a free agent will not be added to the squad despite a growing striker shortage. The announcement comes after two setbacks in the weeks leading up to decisive home fixtures. It leaves the club scrambling for alternatives.
Injury blow hits striker line‑up
During a test match at Viktoria Köln that ended 2‑2, loan striker Thijs Dallinga suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, an injury that is likely to end his season. At the same time, fellow forward Ragnar Ache picked up a knock that will keep him out until the following month. Both injuries occurred in the international break.
The timing could prove costly, as the Effzeh face a derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach and a clash with newly promoted Schalke 04 at home. Those two fixtures are the first mandatory games before the winter break, and missing both strikers could jeopardise crucial points at the Geißbockheim.
Potential sources of goals
Coach René Wagner can still turn to Marius Bülter, who may combine well with Said El Mala, or to Imad Rondic for a different attacking spark. In recent days, rumours circulated that the club might also bring in a free agent – a player without a contract – to fill the gap.
Wie Sky Sport and reported that the club examined several unattached candidates, but none convinced the decision‑makers. Former world‑class forwards such as Karim Benzema and Mauro Icardi were deemed unaffordable, while Joselu has already moved to Qatar.
Club decides against free agent, looks to winter market
According to the same reports, the Effzeh will not sign a free agent this window. Cedric Teuchert and Dawid Kownacki were also dismissed as insufficiently immediate reinforcements. The club therefore opts to rely on existing squad members until the injured pair return.
Wagner now faces the task of bridging October without Dallinga and Ache, hoping that Ache’s return in November will provide some breathing space. The coach has hinted at creative tactical tweaks to compensate for the loss of firepower.
Sporting director Thomas Kessler, a former goalkeeper, is expected to revisit the market in January. He has indicated that the winter window will not be limited to free agents, opening the door to other possible signings.
