Edinburgh club ends Samuel’s 14‑year reign after misconduct probe
Dougie Samuel has departed Spartans after a 14‑year spell as manager, ending the longest tenure in Scottish senior football amid allegations of misconduct and an independent investigation. The Edinburgh‑based League 2 side confirmed his exit on Thursday, citing confidentiality and privacy concerns.
The club first announced in September that the 59‑year‑old would take an extended leave of absence. Sporting director Mixu Paatelainen was tasked with supporting the remaining staff during Samuel’s hiatus.

Spartans later confirmed that Samuel’s contract was terminated following the independent investigation’s findings. A club statement said it would not comment further out of respect for the individuals’ privacy and its confidentiality policy.
Paul Thomson has been appointed interim head coach to steer the side for the remainder of the season. He inherits a team currently third in the fourth tier after eight games.
Spartans suffered a 3‑0 defeat at Dumbarton on Saturday, which left them third in the league. The club had finished second last season after climbing from the Lowland League into the SPFL three years ago under Samuel’s guidance.
