Eddie Howe favoured to replace Michael Carrick after United’s defeat

Manchester United were thrashed 4‑1 by Como in Italy on Wednesday evening in the Champions League, a result that has intensified speculation over manager Michael Carrick’s future. The next Man Utd manager could be former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe if the Red Devils decide to part company with Carrick.

United’s woes extend beyond Europe. They have already been eliminated from the Carabao Cup and have amassed only seven points from seven Premier League matches, leaving them mid‑table.

TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported straight after the match that pressure on Carrick is mounting. “The Manchester United squad have been firmly behind Michael Carrick from the start of his tenure, but that match on the edge of Lake Como was anything but pretty,” he wrote. “For the first time, the players looked lost and not fully committed to the plans laid out by Carrick and his staff.”

Howe emerges as favourite

Journalist Alan Nixon, writing on Patreon, said former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is ready to take charge of Manchester United. Howe has been without a club since parting ways with Newcastle at the end of last season and would “take it” if approached.

TEAMtalk understands United have Howe on their shortlist should they decide to sack Carrick. Transfer correspondent Fraser Fletcher, reporting on 20 October, added that United hold Howe “in high regard” because of his Premier League and European experience and his reputation as a measured, progressive coach.

Other candidates on the radar

Sources also name Brighton & Hove Albion boss Fabian Hurzeler and former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte as possible options for the Red Devils.

Bailey warned that a tough run of games lies ahead before the NEXT international break, describing the period as a massive crossroads for Carrick and United. The squad’s lack of commitment in Italy underscores the urgency of a decision.

If United choose to part company with Carrick, the club will face a pivotal transition as they seek to revive their European ambitions. Until then, the Red Devils remain under intense scrutiny.
