Eckert's pending ban looms over Southampton's derby with Portsmouth
Southampton travel to Portsmouth for the South Coast derby while manager Tonda Eckert remains under a possible FA ban, after the German was charged with three breaches of rule E3.1 for the Spygate scandal. The hearing set for 24 September has yet to deliver a verdict.
EFL sanctions and point loss
Southampton were punished by the EFL in May after admitting to spying on Middlesbrough's training ahead of a play‑off semi‑final, with earlier incidents against Oxford United and Ipswich Town also cited. The club were expelled from the Championship play‑off final and docked four points, a penalty that has kept them out of fourth place this season.
Southampton's early season form
Despite the deduction, the Saints have begun the new campaign in decent form, particularly at St Mary's Stadium. Their home performances have been strong enough that, without the four‑point penalty, they would sit in fourth place in the league table.
The most recent result came a 2‑1 loss to Wrexham on the final day before the international break, after which Eckert publicly apologised for the disappointment.
FA hearing and ban prospects
The FA charged Eckert with three breaches of rule E3.1 in July for directing and observing opposition training sessions. A disciplinary hearing was set for 24 September and is expected to conclude during the current international break, leaving the club in limbo over any possible sanction.
The main fear among Southampton supporters and officials is that the German could receive a lengthy management ban, a scenario not previously seen in English football. The FA’s action would be its first punishment for spying, and it is unclear whether it will follow the FIFA precedent that saw Canada’s women’s coach Bev Priestman receive a one‑year ban for a similar offence.
Reports have suggested that former Wales manager Rob Edwards could be appointed if Eckert is barred, but as of now the German remains on the bench for Sunday’s derby against Portsmouth.
