Echeverri wants to stay at Benfica and could cost Marco Silva €21 million
Claudio Echeverri declared that he wants to stay at Benfica, while the club is considering a purchase clause of 21 million euros that could reshape Marco Silva’s midfield. The Argentinian was a standout in the 4‑1 victory over Omonia, in the third round of the Europa League, but still has no guarantee for the future.
21 million purchase option
Benfica maintains a purchase‑option clause in the agreement made with Manchester City, set at 21 million euros. If the clause is activated, Marco Silva will have four candidates for the central attacking midfield position, which could trigger changes in the squad.
The four names in contention are Georgiy Sudakov, Rafa Silva, Gonçalo Moreira and Claudio Echeverri himself. Each has a different status, but all are viable options for Marco Silva’s coaching staff.
Georgiy Sudakov, the Ukrainian, is looking to firmly establish himself with the reds after criticism last season. Up to the current 2026/27 season, he has 16 games, one goal and one assist.
Rafa Silva, a Benfica reference and in his second spell as an eagle, can also play on the right. This campaign, he records 15 matches, five goals and one assist.
Gonçalo Moreira, considered a pearl of Seixal, was launched by José Mourinho and has already been used by Marco Silva on two occasions, showing versatility in attack.
If the four remain until the summer, it is likely that Benfica will make changes in the position, with at least one of the players leaving, either permanently or on loan, reflecting the pressure generated by Echeverri’s desire to stay at Luz.
