Eagles face defensive woes but back Sage in Premier League

Crystal Palace have let in 11 goals in their first four Premier League games, a defensive record that has sparked criticism, yet the Eagles remain steadfast, giving Frenchman Pierre Sage time to embed his ideas despite the recent 3‑2 loss to Ipswich Town.

The criticism has centred on Sage’s tactics, but the club’s hierarchy has publicly rejected calls for his dismissal. Football Insider reported that the Eagles are prepared to give the Frenchman time to implement his ideas, and that he still enjoys the backing of Crystal Palace.

Defensive record raises questions

Crystal Palace have conceded 11 goals in their opening four Premier League matches, a tally that has raised plenty of questions about the defence. The latest setback came against Ipswich Town, where the Eagles suffered a 3‑2 defeat after conceding a late goal.

Rebuilding amid setbacks

The defensive rebuild was hampered by Maxence Lacroix’s departure in the summer, leaving a significant gap in the back line. Axel Disasi and Honest Ahanor arrived on loan to fill the void, while a disrupted pre‑season saw several Palace players tied up with the World Cup before returning to club duties.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes Palace have enough positives to build on, but he warned that the defensive problems cannot continue indefinitely.

The Eagles displayed attacking quality in their victory over Fulham, yet regularly conceding two or three goals threatens their ambition for the season.

Sage now faces pressure to find a solution quickly and establish greater defensive stability. While the club remains willing to stand by the Frenchman, continued lapses could increase scrutiny as the coming weeks prove crucial for his tenure.
