Dutch women dominate Hungary, final play‑offs near

In the illuminated stadium of Budapest, Friday evening, the Dutch women's national team broke away with an overwhelming 0‑8 victory over Hungary. Coach Arjan Veurink saw his squad a few sizes bigger than the opponent, putting the final of the World Cup play‑offs within reach.

Play‑offs and road to World Cup 2027

After a second place behind France in the World Cup qualification group, the Netherlands must win two two‑leg matches to qualify for the World Cup 2027 in Brazil. In the draw, the team was paired with Hungary, which is 35 places lower on the FIFA world ranking.

Veurink gave a starting spot to Daniëlle van de Donk, who thereby earned her 175th cap. She played a key role in the opening goal, after which her clever switch Lineth Beerensteyn let the ball be finished.

Beerensteyn scored shortly thereafter her second goal, followed by a goal from Victoria Pelova via a defender, making the score quickly 0‑3. Before halftime, Esmee Brugts put down the fourth goal after a rebound.

After the break, Damaris Egurrola quickly got on the scoresheet, after which Pelova scored two more times (0‑6 and 0‑7). Beerensteyn completed her hat‑trick with a goal on the goal line.

The return match against Hungary is scheduled for Tuesday at 20:45, and is seen as a formality after the convincing first leg. A possible final of the play‑offs could be against Turkey or Slovenia, who drew 3‑3 on Friday.

The final matches take place between 26 November and 5 December, giving the Dutch women a final step towards the World Cup 2027 on the horizon.
