Dutch scepticism meets foreign coach: Van Bronckhorst backs Xavi

For the first time in 48 years, the Netherlands national team has appointed Xavi as a foreign head coach, a move that has sparked scepticism among many Nederlanders, a sentiment that Feyenoord‑trainer Giovanni van Bronckhorst says he understands publicly he understands today.

The appointment ends a 48‑year stretch without a non‑Dutch coach, a period during which the Nederlands elftal has been led exclusively by homegrown managers. Many Nederlanders view the change with caution.

Legacy of foreign Dutch coaches

Van Bronckhorst reminded fans that the Netherlands has previously embraced foreign‑born Dutch coaches such as Johan Cruijff, Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard, names that still resonate when people think of Nederlandse coaches abroad.

He added, “If you have a foreign coach, it feels a bit uncomfortable, but we must give Xavi the confidence that he can succeed. As with any trainer, the top priority is that he must perform.”

During a Friday‑afternoon press conference about Feyenoord’s upcoming match against Go Ahead Eagles, Van Bronckhorst spoke at length about his former teammate, noting they shared the field for 120 matches at FC Barcelona between 2003 and 2007.

Language and communication

Van Bronckhorst also addressed the language issue, pointing out that Xavi, a Spanjaard, does not speak Dutch but is comfortable in English. “Met Xavi the discussions will be in the language he feels most at ease with,” he said, adding that he trusts the coach can express himself well.

PSV‑coach Peter Bosz expressed surprise at the KNVB’s choice of the 46‑year‑old Spaniard, noting that the Netherlands has not had a foreign bondscoach for a long time and that the appointment was not leaked.

Louis van Gaal, former Netherlands manager, also voiced support on his Instagram page, writing, “Gefeliciteerd Xavi, veel succes mijn vriend.”
