Tadić’s Ajax comparison ignites NEC fan outrage ahead of Amsterdam clash

Serbian forward Dusan Tadić has found himself at the centre of a heated controversy after remarks comparing Ajax to NEC sparked a wave of backlash from Nijmegen supporters ahead of the Eredivisie showdown in Amsterdam. In a recent interview with NU.nl, the 37‑year‑old admitted that Ajax remains his "standard" and described the Dutch club as a "top‑10 club in Europe," adding that NEC "cannot be compared" with his former team. The comments were perceived as disrespectful by many NEC fans, who responded with banners, social media abuse and even a caricature demanding the player "go away."

The backlash intensified as the match approached, with NEC supporters displaying a protest sign reading “Tadić rot op” in the club’s fan zone. Meanwhile, Ajax fans turned the occasion into a tribute, unfurling a massive banner and singing in honour of Tadić’s 105 goals and 112 assists in 241 appearances for the Amsterdam side. The contrasting reactions highlighted the emotional stakes surrounding the fixture, especially for Tadić, who returned to the Johan Cruyff Arena for the first time since leaving the club in 2023. "Ajax is my great love since childhood, but NEC is now my club and I must give everything for them," he said, adding that the familiar surroundings triggered a flood of memories. Tadić defended his earlier statements, claiming the media had twisted his words. "The media often look for something negative to spin. I never meant to be disrespectful to NEC. When asked ten times about the difference between the clubs, I couldn’t just stay silent," he explained. He reiterated his belief that Ajax’s history and player quality place it among Europe’s elite, while NEC remains a "good sub‑top club" still finding its identity. The controversy has also raised questions about player‑media relations in Dutch football. Tadić warned that sensationalist questioning may discourage players from speaking openly, noting that "players are becoming more reluctant to say anything" when they fear misinterpretation. NEC’s management has yet to issue an official response, but the club’s coach emphasized the team’s focus on the upcoming match, stating that “our priority is to perform on the pitch and continue the growth we started last season.” The incident is likely to add extra pressure on Tadić and his teammates as they seek to prove their worth against his former club. As the two sides prepare to meet, the narrative will not only revolve around tactics and points but also the lingering tension from Tadić’s comments, making the encounter a focal point for both clubs’ supporters.
