Duranville’s early €10m hype clashes with a stalled Lyon start

Duranville’s early €10m hype clashes with a stalled Lyon start

Four years after dazzling as a sixteen‑year‑old sensation at Anderlecht, twenty‑year‑old Julien Duranville still searches for the breakthrough that once seemed inevitable. The winger swapped a near €10 million move to Borussia Dortmund for a €5 million transfer to Olympique Lyon, yet regular minutes remain elusive.

Early hype at Anderlecht

Duranville burst onto the scene at Anderlecht when he turned sixteen, instantly being labelled a sensation. His explosive pace and unpredictable dribbling prompted Borussia Dortmund to pay almost €10 million for his services, a fee that underscored his status as one of his generation’s brightest Belgian prospects. He debuted for the first team at sixteen and was widely regarded as one of the biggest Belgian talents of his cohort.

Sparse appearances and injuries at Dortmund

He made his Bundesliga debut at seventeen, but over four seasons he accumulated only fifteen league appearances, nine Champions League outings and a single domestic cup match. Persistent injuries, including a growth‑related adjustment after his move to Germany, limited his ability to stay fit. A severe shoulder injury suffered in the summer of 2025 against Real Madrid required surgery and further stalled his progress. Dortmund continued to believe in his potential, even investing in his physical stability the season before the new injury.

Loan spell and Lyon move

In January 2026 Dortmund sent Duranville on loan to Basel, hoping regular game time would restore his rhythm. The following summer Olympique Lyon secured his signature for €5 million, a sum that could rise to €8.5 million with bonuses, and tied him to a contract lasting until 2031. Lyon presented him as the successor to Afonso Moreira, expecting him to inject similar dynamism on the wing. The player also had to adapt after growing a few centimetres, a physical change he said required a new approach to senior football.

At Lyon the winger now faces a double hurdle: regaining full fitness while competing for a place in a side that has started the campaign strongly without him. The lack of continuity threatens his ability to showcase the explosiveness that defined his early reputation, and without regular minutes his one‑on‑one actions lose their edge.

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl remarked during the Basel loan that Dortmund still saw “a lot of potential in Duranville” but acknowledged that injuries had prevented him from fully displaying his talent. Duranville himself has said his “body played tricks on him after the move to Germany”, citing the need to adapt to a growing frame. Former Dortmund coach Niko Kovac added that while the player is “technically excellent and extremely dynamic”, he must learn to simplify his game and improve defensive insight.

Anderlecht watched his departure in January 2023 with “pain in the heart”, recalling how the seven‑year‑old had risen through their ranks to debut at sixteen. Though Duranville is no longer the teenage wonderkid for whom everyone had patience, the club and observers agree that at twenty he can still build a substantial career if he secures consistent minutes; time, however, is beginning to weigh on his prospects.
