Doubts about Florian Wirtz at Liverpool grow – future uncertain

At Anfield there is a tense silence, while former Red heroes Jamie Carragher and Dietmar Hamann emphasize in an interview with the portal Givemesport that Florian Wirtz and Liverpool must soon go their separate ways. Hamann says that the 23‑year‑old German has lost all confidence in his abilities and no longer believes in a Premier League career.
Former pros criticize the current situation
Hamann, who himself played for the German national team, notes that the hopes that the coaching change from Arne Slot to Andoni Iraola would improve Wirtz's situation on the Anfield Road have not materialised. “His performances are no better than last season,” Hamann adds.
Statistical facts prove the crisis
Since the €125‑million move from Bayer Leverkusen to the Reds, Wirtz has scored only seven goals in 58 competitive matches – a sharp decline compared with 57 goals in 197 games for Leverkusen, where he also provided 65 assists. In the Premier League he has shown hardly any goal involvements since the 0‑3 debacle against Manchester City on 11 October.
Further voices and possible options
Carragher adds that Liverpool “must make a decision – perhaps not in winter, but at the end of the season,” if there is no major tournament looming. He stresses the “great goodwill” of the fans, but criticises that Wirtz “doesn’t score goals” and that in Iraola’s system with wide wingers he does not fit the finishing role.
Uli Hoeneß criticises Liverpool's use of Florian Wirtz
The same interview mentions that Wirtz acted as a playmaker in the game against Brentford last weekend, created nine chances for Liverpool and, according to Opta, reached a metric that no Premier League player has achieved in five years.
Additional transfer rumours are reported: talks with Chelsea FC and Bayern Munich FC are mentioned. The German record champions want to sign Wirtz in the summer of 2025, while Bayern legend Uli Hoeneß already showed sympathy for the “poor Flo Wirtz” back in November.
Hoeneß also criticised Liverpool’s high spending in the summer – almost €500 million – and noted that stars such as Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai frequently claim the ball for themselves, which further hinders Wirtz.
