Dortmund stays unbeaten with Veerman and retakes the Bundesliga lead
Borussia Dortmund continued its unbeaten run in the Bundesliga when Joey Veerman started and Maximilian Beier scored the only goal in the second half against VfB Stuttgart, allowing coach Niko Kovac’s side to regain the top spot, after a disappointing Friday for Bayern Munich.
Veerman’s role and the winning goal
In the first half both teams dominated, but nothing happened. Stuttgart‑forward Nico Schlotterbeck headed wide from a Veerman corner, and Bilal El Khannouss also missed. Ethan Nwaneri saw a chance disappear due to an offside position. Joey Veerman received a yellow card and was substituted after just over an hour by Jobe Bellingham.
With a low cross from Bellingham, Maximilian Beier was able to collect the ball and secure the 0‑1. Beier, who had been notably absent from the national team earlier in the week, scored with a tap‑in. The victory kept Dortmund unbeaten and returned the side to the top of the Bundesliga.
Bayern’s record victory
On Friday Bayern Munich achieved a celebratory 7‑0 win over Union Berlin, a match that was full of records. The overwhelming result gave Bayern the lead in the standings.
After that win Dortmund had lost the top spot to Bayern, but the necessary victory over Stuttgart allowed the side to regain the lead.
Implications for the standings
Dortmund now sit at the top of the Bundesliga with twelve points after four matches. VfB Stuttgart, which sits fourteenth in the table, had only three points from the first three games and struggled to earn a point. Keeper Gregor Kobel made two saves, while Joshua Vagnoman and Bilal El Khannouss had chances; Leo Sauer came on as a substitute in the final minutes.
In other Bundesliga fixtures Borussia Mönchengladbach continued to search for its first win, after the club lost 3‑4 to FSV Mainz. Sheraldo Becker shone, while Kevin Diks struck a penalty against the post. These results underline the competitive pressure in the league.
