Dortmund's win over Villarreal triggers €34,500 fine for misconduct

On 8 September, Borussia Dortmund edged Villarreal 3‑2 at the Estadio Signal Iduna Park in Alemania, securing the opening Liga de Campeones group‑stage win. UEFA later announced the German side faces a €34,500 fine after flares and objects were thrown by supporters during the match.

Match details

The encounter unfolded at the iconic Signal Iduna Park, where Iñigo Pérez’s Villarreal side fought back but ultimately fell short. Despite a great encounter, the Spanish club could not prevent the three‑goal defeat. The result marked Dortmund’s first victory of the Champions League campaign.

Villarreal, managed by Iñigo Pérez, displayed resilience but conceded three times, ending the night with a 3‑2 loss. The match was the first jornada of the group stage, setting the tone for both teams.

Fine and regulations

UEFA’s disciplinary committee imposed a €34,500 sanction on Borussia Dortmund, citing the launch of flares and other objects during the game. The penalty derives from article 16 of the UEFA Code of Discipline, which bans any objects that could endanger safety or disrupt the match.

The resolution stresses that clubs are responsible for fan behaviour, even if they can demonstrate no organisational negligence. Such measures aim to preserve order and safety at European fixtures.

The report was filed by CHRISTOPHER NEUNDORF of EFE and journalist Ramón Fuentes in Madrid, confirming the fine and the disciplinary basis.

According to UEFA, the fine will be payable by Borussia Dortmund as stipulated in the disciplinary resolution.
