Dortmund's €30m gamble on Greek midfielder Giannis Konstantelias
Officially, Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of 23‑year‑old Greek international attacking midfielder Giannis Konstantelias from PAOK. The deal, announced after his medical on Sunday, includes a guaranteed €26 million fee plus €6 million in add‑ons and ties the player to the club until 2030.
Why Dortmund revived interest
Dortmund’s scouting department had renewed its pursuit of Konstantelias only last week, after earlier reports noted the club’s revived interest. The rapidity with which the German side finalised the agreement impressed observers, highlighting a decisive approach to securing the Greek talent.
The 23‑year‑old will sign a contract running to 2030, securing his services for the long term. Dortmund will pay a guaranteed €26 million, with an additional €6 million in performance‑related add‑ons, bringing the realistic total package close to €30 million. A 15 % sell‑on clause is also embedded in the agreement.
Konstantelias completed his medical examination on Sunday, confirming his fitness for the move. Both Borussia Dortmund and PAOK had already reached full agreement on the transfer terms prior to the medical, ensuring a smooth completion.
Upon confirming the transfer, Konstantelias said, “I am very much looking forward to playing for Borussia Dortmund in future. BVB is a great club and I will give my all to be successful here.” The statement reflects his enthusiasm about joining the German outfit.
The addition of a young Greek international bolsters Dortmund’s attacking options as they prepare for upcoming campaigns. Securing the player early demonstrates the club’s intent to reinforce the squad ahead of future domestic and European challenges.
PAOK benefit financially from the €26 million guaranteed fee and potential €6 million in add‑ons, with the overall package estimated at around €30 million. The 15 % sell‑on clause also promises future revenue should Konstantelias move on from Dortmund.
