Dortmund keep two stars training with the U23 during break

Borussia Dortmund will be without a host of national players during the upcoming international break, but two of the club’s senior stars will remain in the city and join the reserve side for training. This arrangement aims to keep them match‑ready while the first team is dispersed.

During the break, Borussia Dortmund will miss a large contingent of its Nationalspieler, as most of the first‑team squad joins their respective countries. The absence will affect the club’s depth across several positions. Coach Edin Terzić will rely on the remaining squad to maintain training intensity.

Marcel Sabitzer and Maximilian Beier are the two professionals who will stay in Dortmund. Both have been assigned to train with the club’s U23 side from the coming week. Their presence offers continuity for the reserve group.

Individual training programmes for the reserves

The pair will not be simply added to the U23 roster; bespoke training schedules have been drawn up to manage their workload. These plans aim to keep the players in rhythm without requiring match appearances for the amateurs.

Sabitzer’s situation is unsurprising. The Austrian Nationalspieler recently announced a temporary pause on international duties, meaning the 32‑year‑old remains available throughout the break. Dortmund can therefore count on his fitness when the squad reconvenes.

Beier also stays out of the German national team picture. The 23‑year‑old forward was omitted by national coach Jürgen Klopp for the upcoming fixtures, prompting him to train with the U23 instead of taking a full hiatus. This keeps his sharpness ahead of the league resumption.

BVB‑U23 are in good form, having beaten Westfalia Rhynern 2‑1 and sitting third in the Regionalliga West. The win underlines the competitive environment the two seniors will be immersed in.

Most of Dortmund’s Nationalspieler are expected back from 5 October, after which Sabitzer and Maxi Beier will return to first‑team duties following their two‑week spell with the reserves. The club hopes the arrangement will smooth the transition back to full training.
