Dispute over assistant coach Nelson Morgado ends Toppmöller at RC Lens

Former Bundesliga coach Dino Toppmöller is history at French top‑flight club RC Lens after only three months, as a dispute over co‑coach Nelson Morgado doomed his tenure and led to a mutual separation on Tuesday evening. The vice‑champion confirmed the move and said the reason was that Toppmöller could not support the planned restructuring of the coaching staff.

Structural Reorientation

After numerous discussions about the squad structure as well as the working methods and organization of the coaching staff, the club informed its coach of the intention to restructure the staff. Part of the new concept was the reshuffling of the coaching team. Media reported that a dispute between the club hierarchy and Toppmöller over co‑coach and trusted associate Nelson Morgado triggered the conflict.

Toppmöller, former Bundesliga coach at Eintracht Frankfurt, arrived at Lens in the summer after an extraordinary season. He first won a title in the French Super Cup, when the team beat PSG in the first official match. In his brief spell he oversaw six league matches, including a 3‑2 Champions League victory over Slavia Prague. In total he featured in six league games.

Sportingly the bosses are satisfied with the 45‑year‑old coach, but after four league games Lens sits only in tenth place due to significant injury concerns. The performance in the league and the match results fall short of expectations.
