Discipline over ambition: Napoli excludes Noa Lang

Noa Lang, the Dutch international, is not in Napoli's matchday squad for the Champions League match against Arsenal on Wednesday evening. The club gave disciplinary reasons for his absence, meaning the 27‑year‑old forward will watch the game from the stands. Fans were surprised by the decision.

Fans surprised by absence

When the lineup was released, many supporters reacted with surprise. That Lang did not receive a starting spot from Massimiliano Allegri was not unexpected, but his name was even missing from the substitutes. The absence sparked discussion on social media.

Club explains disciplinary reason

Sporting director Giovanni Manna gave clarification to Sky Sport. “He has behaved inappropriately, so he will watch the match together with me. He has offered his apologies to the team and the coach, and with that the matter is closed,” said the official. Manna emphasized that honesty and team discipline are a priority.

Lang has a four‑year contract with Napoli until mid‑2030. So far he has played 29 matches, scored one goal and provided two assists. These figures show that he has had a role, but not as a regular starter.

This season he started one of the three Serie A fixtures, against Como. Against Genoa he came on as a substitute, and in the match against Inter he spent the entire game on the bench. Thus he has had varying playing time under Allegri.

Before the summer there was much speculation about his future. He had been loaned to Galatasaray for the past six months and a return to Istanbul seemed possible. Ajax saw him as a successor to Mika Godts, and Atalanta Bergamo offered an option for a domestic transfer, but ultimately he remained in Naples.

Alongside Lang, Sam Beukema, another Dutchman, is also on the bench. There is no other Dutch player in Allegri’s starting eleven. The club is now focusing on the match against Arsenal, while Lang will follow the action from the stands.
