Diouf says I'm not a winger, but at Inter I need to play on the flank
Andy Diouf spoke to L’Equipe describing his transformation from central midfielder to winger, a move that is giving him ample playing time even in high‑profile matches, such as the one against Real Madrid, where he started among the starters.
“I never would have thought I’d play in this position,” said the former Basel and Lens player, adding that starting in such matches allows him to express himself at his best.
The winger role at Inter
Diouf explained that, although his goal is to return to midfield, he accepts playing on the flank because it allows him to gain visibility in Italy, where he is still not well known. “I don’t feel like a full‑back or a winger,” he clarified, emphasizing his preference for midfield, where he was developed.
The midfielder added that, if playing as a winger allows him to establish himself at Inter, he will do so without hesitation, giving his all in every match. When he has the ball he behaves like a winger, but in defense he must track back, a task that requires great effort and leaves him exhausted at the end of games.
The first test as a winger came in a match against Milan, when the coach decided to change the formation at halftime. Diouf said he seized the opportunity, coming onto the pitch, creating a few chances and showing that he has the qualities to operate on the flank.
According to Diouf, that intervention left a lasting impression, confirming that the flank can become his comfort zone if used correctly. The experience taught him to manage both the offensive and defensive phases, although he admits he still feels more at ease in the centre.
Diouf concludes that, regardless of the role, his development at Inter represents an example of adaptability for young players seeking to break through in competitive leagues.
