Diego entered the pitch accompanied by his daughter, receiving a warm reception from the assembled crowd. The applause underscored the affection the supporters still hold for the club’s former star.

Match details and legacy

The Werder legends line‑up featured Tim Borowski, Ailton, Per Mertesacker, Naldo and Markus Rosenberg. Their presence added historic weight to the centenary occasion.

Real Madrid’s side comprised former internationals Christian Karembeu, Esteban Cambiasso, Pepe, Fábio Coentrão and Claude Makélélé. The Spanish contingent brought a wealth of experience to the friendly.

The German legends edged a 4‑3 victory. Werder’s goals came from Diego Ribas, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Markus Rosenberg and Angelos Charisteas, while Real’s scores were recorded by De la Red, Callejón and Agus.

After the match Ribas told the club’s official website, “Foi, como sempre, uma grande honra jogar neste estádio diante desta torcida. O jogo foi ótimo, jogamos juntos de forma brilhante.” He added that providing an “incredible night” for fans was the most important outcome.

During his spell at Werder Bremen from 2006 to 2009, Diego Ribas made 132 appearances and netted 53 goals. He also helped the club lift the German Cup and the German League Cup, marking the most successful period of his European career.

The tribute reinforced the strong bond between Ribas and Werder Bremen, reminding supporters of the lasting impact he made during his tenure.
