Retirement announcement
In his Instagram post Demme wrote, “Irgendwann kommt der Moment, an dem man sich von etwas verabschieden muss, das einen fast sein ganzes Leben begleitet hat. Und jetzt ist dieser Moment für mich gekommen.” The message, posted in German, was accompanied by a photo of the player looking thoughtful, and he described his feelings as “ein wenig traurig”.
National team memories
Demme was nominated for the 2017 Confederations Cup by then national team manager Joachim Löw, and he earned his sole cap as a substitute against San Marino. A brief appearance that remained his only outing in the DFB‑dress, he later withdrew from the Russian tournament because of back problems.
He recalled how, as a small boy, he dreamed of stepping onto the pitch of a major arena and finally living that dream when he played for top clubs. “Ich wollte einfach Fußball spielen – und irgendwann durfte ich diesen Traum tatsächlich leben,” he said, highlighting both the triumphs and the setbacks that shaped him.
Throughout his professional journey Demme represented Arminia Bielefeld, SC Paderborn, RB Leipzig, SSC Napoli and finally Hertha BSC, before becoming a club‑less German‑Italian. He described football as “so viel mehr als nur mein Beruf”, calling it his life, passion and everyday routine that brought him “viele besondere Menschen und Momente”.
In closing, Demme thanked his family, coaches and “alle Menschen, die Teil dieser Reise waren”. He said the “runde Ding” – football – would always hold a special place in his heart, marking the end of an era for the former Nationalspieler.
