DFB, Urbig and Treu count among the three young Klopp winners after Greece
In the dusty stadium of Thessaloniki, the 23‑year‑old goalkeeper Jonas Urbig kept the net clean, while the DFB‑team finished the Nations League with a 0:0 against Greece. Despite the missed victory, Urbig, right‑back Philipp Treu and Freiburg winger Derry Scherhant felt like real winners. All three were called up as internationals by Jürgen Klopp in the first four games.
Urbig shines in goal
Jonas Urbig put in a solid performance in Greece and made a spectacular save after just two minutes. The Bayern‑goalkeeper, who is still an apprentice of Manuel Neuer, spoke fluent English on Greek television and appeared mature both on the pitch and off it. “I was just happy to help the team and that we’re all awake now,” he said after the match.
Treu convinces in the full‑back position
Philipp Treu, 25, enjoyed the attention after his third international cap within ten days and said: “I’m happy when someone recognises me.” According to his own words, he has achieved his goal of establishing himself as Philipp Treu. Treu logged 270 minutes of play and was therefore the most‑used player in the first Klopp‑block, impressing against Cody Gakpo, Filip Kostic and Alexandros Kyziridis.
Scherhant surprises in attack
Derry Scherhant, a 23‑year‑old from Freiburg, was the biggest surprise in the large Klopp‑squad and only really broke through in the Bundesliga this season. Lothar Matthäus already named him as a candidate for the smaller squad in November, and the DFB‑sport director advised him: “Give it your all, don’t hide.” Scherhant himself said: “For my part I’m grateful that I was able to be part of it. It’s more than a dream for me when I realise where I come from.”
Jürgen Klopp justified Urbig’s second appearance with the need for match practice, even though the young goalkeeper was unaware of it himself. In Munich, Urbig returns behind Manuel Neuer, while the rivalry with Marc‑André ter Stegen could gain intensity. Philipp Treu will be recognised more often in the future, not only in the Breisgau, because he has achieved his goal.
The three players embody the DFB’s long‑standing search for an international right‑back, a reliable goalkeeper and fresh attacking potential. Their performances in Greece give Jürgen Klopp’s coaching staff and German football new hope for the upcoming Nations‑League rounds.
