DFB team stars show light and shadow in Klopp's debut

Jürgen Klopp made his debut as head coach of the German national team in Amsterdam, where William Laing reported on the DFB‑Team Stars' Nations‑League start against the Netherlands; the team had to concede the equaliser only after 90 heated minutes. The match ended in a 1:1 draw, denying the hoped‑for victory in the opening.

First Half: Pressing and Lead

The DFB‑Stars started from the beginning with high pressing and aggression against the Dutch. Just after a little more than half an hour, Felix Nmecha gave the lead in the 32nd minute after quickly finishing a blocked ball in the penalty area. Previously, a goal by Brian Brobbey in the 15th minute had been rescinded due to a VAR intervention after a foul on Marc‑Andre ter Stegen.

Just before the break, Karim Adeyemi missed a clear chance that could have secured a 2:0 lead for Germany (39th minute). Despite the early burst of energy, the German side later lost its thread and allowed the hosts' pressure to rise. The first half ended with a narrow lead that was not yet secured.

Second Half: Resistance, Reactions and Outlook

In the second half the Dutch side continuously increased the pressure and, through Cody Gakpo, scored the late equaliser, so the game ended 1:1. The Dutch worked chance after chance and gave the German team hardly any opportunity to counter‑attack.

At the press conference Klopp described the match as a “very, very good performance” by goalkeeper Marc‑Andre ter Stegen and said: “I would have loved to win, but I can live with the point.” He was satisfied despite the point.

Just before kickoff Bayern star Jamal Musiala had to leave the field, and Arsenal midfielder Kai Havertz was injured during the match. Both players were taken straight to the MRI; Klopp expressed hope that nothing serious was the case and that the lads would become fit again quickly.

Next Sunday the German eleven will meet Greece in Augsburg in Klopp’s first home game. If Musiala has not fully recovered yet, he could miss out, as could Havertz if the examination takes longer.
