DFB surprises with early Adidas jersey selection in Amsterdam
The DFB team led by Nathaniel Brown is already wearing the farewell shirt from kit supplier Adidas in the first match of the new national coach, which will be played on Thursday evening in Amsterdam against the Netherlands – an earlier use than originally planned. The decision comes as a surprise and replaces the previously planned green retro jersey.
Originally, the black jersey with golden diamond stripes was only supposed to be used for the second leg on 16 November in Berlin. Instead, a green retro jersey was planned, which recalls the away shirt from the 1990 World Cup.
Short‑term Decision and UEFA Approval
A short‑term decision replaced the planned outfit after the UEFA approval was obtained. This allows the black jersey to be worn already in the Johan Cruyff Arena.
The jersey stands out with a black base design and golden stripes made up of small diamonds. The DFB explained that these diamonds symbolize more than 24,000 football clubs, the foundation of German football.
Adidas Campaign and Jersey Choice
Adidas released at the beginning of the week a commercial film in which Philipp Lahm, Florian Wirtz and Jürgen Klinsmann discuss the most beautiful DFB jersey. The presentation of the farewell jersey was announced for 3 November. Adidas commented on the advanced premiere: “Since the beginning of the week, football stars and fans have been debating which is the best DFB jersey of all time. We are pleased that from now on another jersey becomes part of the debate.”
In the team headquarters in Herzogenaurach, the white and the green DFB jersey are on display. For the match on Sunday in Augsburg against Greece and the subsequent duel in Munich against Serbia, a white home jersey is planned. Which jersey the national players will wear in the away match in Greece on 4 October remains undecided.
After 77 years, the partnership with Adidas ends this year. From 2027, Nike will equip the national team, allegedly for 100 million euros per year. For the man in the team, this marks the beginning of a new chapter.
