Despite nomination, Nicolo Tresoldi remains out for international break

Despite being nominated, Nicolo Tresoldi has decided not to feature for either Germany or Italy in the upcoming international break, even though as a striker his form would have made him a possible candidate for the national team. The decision comes as Jürgen Klopp is about to announce his first squad as head coach.

Dual citizenship and U21‑status

According to the report by Italian sports journalist Nicolo Schira, Tresoldi will not line up for Italy in the upcoming international break. He is currently a U21‑player for the German national team and plays for Club Brugge, which makes him eligible for both Germany and Italy because of his dual citizenship.

Roberto Mancini had planned to nominate the striker for the upcoming matches. Media reports from Italy show that Mancini has already spoken with Tresoldi to persuade him to switch associations. However, the conversation has so far borne no fruit.

This situation continues to give the DFB and Jürgen Klopp the opportunity to win the young forward for the A‑national team. The head coach will soon present his first squad for the German national team, with Tresoldi currently not being considered in the squad.

For the upcoming international matches, Tresoldi will probably not yet be part of the team. He has stated that he needs more time to decide whether he wants to pursue his international career in the dress of the DFB or the Squadra Azzurra.

It remains to be seen how this decision will affect the selection process in international sport. The case highlights how strongly the sport is shaped by individual decisions and dual citizenship.
