Derby County’s £2 million dilemma as Zetterstrom’s future hangs in balance
Derby County, fresh from an eighth‑place finish that left them four points shy of the play‑offs, must plug a looming gap in goal as Jacob Zetterstrom attracts interest. Owner David Clowes faces a decisive summer test to retain the keeper while the Rams chase a top‑six push for 2027.
Season ambition and new signings
John Eustace’s side is determined to bridge the gap to the Championship’s elite after missing the play‑offs by just four points. To sustain momentum, Derby sanctioned a permanent deal for midfielder Bobby Clark, who logged 42 Championship appearances, three goals and three assists on loan from RB Salzburg last season. The Rams have also bolstered the squad with Filip Bilbija, Charlie Taylor, Sammie Szmodics and Alex Mowatt, with further signings expected before the 1 September deadline.

Goalkeeper offer and owner stance
One player whose future hangs in the balance is 28‑year‑old goalkeeper Jacob Zetterstrom, who started the 2‑1 loss to Charlton Athletic last weekend. Italian Serie A side Monza have tabled an offer of €2.5 million (£2.1 million) plus a 50 per cent sell‑on clause for the Swede. Derby’s owner David Clowes is expected to reject a deal worth just £2 million, arguing it undervalues a first‑team goalkeeper.
Zetterstrom, an internationally recognised keeper who featured at the World Cup last summer, has made 73 league appearances for Derby since joining in the 2024 summer window. Last season he kept seven clean sheets, conceded 42 goals in 32 games and posted a 71.4 per cent save rate with 3.28 saves per 90 minutes. His performances helped Derby secure eighth place, preventing an estimated 5.48 goals according to expected‑goals data.
With the transfer window closing on 1 September, the club must decide whether to meet Monza’s bid or retain Zetterstrom for a potential £10 million valuation. Eustace will also look to reinforce the squad without losing key players, as further offers could emerge in the final two weeks. The Rams’ ability to hold onto the goalkeeper will be a decisive factor in their push for a top‑eight finish in the expanded 2027 competition.
