Derby County eye Brentford left‑back after Thomas Frank’s rave

Derby County eye Brentford left‑back after Thomas Frank’s rave

Derby County have a clear need for a new left‑back as injuries sideline Matt Clarke and Derry Murkin, and manager John Eustace is eyeing a loan move for Brentford’s Jayden Meghoma, a player Thomas Frank described as one of the biggest left‑back talents in the country.

Injury crisis forces left‑back overhaul

Matt Clarke is set to miss around three months with a muscle problem, while Derry Murkin, who joined Derby in January 2026 from FC Utrecht and recorded three assists in twelve Championship appearances, faces an absence of up to four months.

Charlie Taylor and Ryan Hedges have arrived on free transfers this summer, but the departure of Callum Elder leaves the Rams short‑handed, and veteran Craig Forsyth, aged 37, is not a long‑term solution for regular left‑back duties.

Frank’s endorsement fuels loan target

Former Brentford boss Thomas Frank called Meghoma “one of the biggest left‑back talents this country has”, highlighting his potential value for Derby.

Meghoma, 20, progressed through Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton academies before joining Brentford in 2024, and has logged four first‑team appearances for the Bees, fourteen for Preston North End, and forty‑four appearances – one goal and four assists – on loan with Rangers last season.

With Derby’s spending power limited after the failed takeover by Turki Alalshikh, the club is likely to rely on cheap deals and loans; the loan market typically opens later in the window, and Derby have previously used it for players such as Sam Bobby Clark, Sam Szmodics and Ben Brereton Diaz.

Brentford’s own left‑back options include Keane Lewis‑Potter, Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry under Keith Andrews, while West Ham United’s El Hadji Malick Diouf is also being pursued, meaning Meghoma’s path to the Bees’ first team is uncertain.
